A Therapeutic massage addresses a particular complaint you may be suffering from. For example: low back pain, tight hips, limited range of motion. Therapeutic massage can help with pain management and relief and may require multiple sessions. I follow a 4 step protocol. First, I will meet with you to take a health history and find out how long you have been experience pain, etc. Second, I will tailor a therapy plan that addresses your individual specific needs. Third, I will perform the massage therapy as planned. Finally, together we will determine how well the therapy session worked and provide an evaluation to assess if your pain decreased, range-of-motion increased, etc.
The body may develop scar tissue where a surgical incision is in the skin or if muscles and tendons were cut or repaired, Scar tissue is formed by collagen that your body lays down in a random fashion after an injury to become normal healthy tissue. (Normal healthy collagen is aligned in specific ways and directions that give your tissue strength.)
Cross friction or transverse friction massage involves using one or two fingers to massage your scar in a direction that is perpendicular to the line of the scar. This technique helps to remodel the scar and realigns the fibers. Myofascial release (MFR) is often used to manage scar tissue and related adhesions. The technique involves using the hands to massage the skin and underlying tissues around the scar. Motions are slow and the amount of force used is usually light.
Deep Tissue Massage is a form of bodywork that aims to relieve tension in the deeper layers of tissue in the body. Deep tissue massage is a highly effective method for releasing chronic stress areas due to misalignment, repetitive motions, and lingering injuries. Due to the nature of the deep tissue work, open communication during the session is crucial to minimize discomfort. Keep in mind that soreness is common after this type of treatment, and plenty of water should be ingested to aid with the flushing and removal of toxins that are released from the deep tissue during the session.
Cupping Massage Therapy uses small suction cups that allow for a targeted deep tissue treatment. Instead of compressing your fascia and muscles, cupping pulls your fascia and muscles up into the cup utilizing negative pressure. Cupping helps loosen the restrictions in your fascia, which loosens adhesions and promotes the release of toxins in your muscles. Cupping Therapy can be used for breaking-up scar tissue and adhesions and increasing your range of motion. By loosening tight muscles you will: recover quicker from workouts, aide in the relief of chronic stress injuries due to repetitive motion, and manage pain and relief from soft tissue injuries.

Tightness and limited range of motion in the shoulder and trunk following mastectomy surgery is normal, but post-mastectomy massage therapy can help aid the healing process. While the body hastily-lays collagen fibers, lumps can form, and pulling and puckering in the superficial tissues can result in adhesion. Massage can help collagen to spread in a more organized manner and keep tissue pliable and reduce pull on the incision and the surrounding tissues. Surrounding muscle tissue of the upper chest and shoulders may also benefit from massage after surgery.
